He approached them with a bright smile on his face. "Hello, what's inside the basket," Coralia asked, smiling back at him. "Snacks and mineral water, Ma'am," he replied. He took a packet of groundnuts and the chips and showed it to the two women. "How much for a packet of chips and a bottle of mineral water?" Sassy asked. The boy looked sunburnt and dishevelled and wore black shorts and an oversized white T-shirt. His hair was tousled and looked unkempt due to the strong sea breeze blowing their way. "A dollar, Ma'am," he replied. Coralia had a dollar in her pocket and gave it to him. She bought another bottle of mineral water and paid him an extra fifty cents. The boy looked happy and was about to leave when Coralia asked, "Are you from nearby here?" She noticed that the boy was barefoot and had a cut on his ankle. "Yes, over there, where the kampung is. Behind your hotel." Coralia asked then, "Did you fall earlier? There is a cut on your ankle and the wound looks fresh. "No, I hit against the rock when I tried to climb up on one. It's nothing, just a small cut. It will heal soon. Thank you, Ma'am," the boy started to walk away. "Well, are you Malay? I mean, are you local?" Coralia prodded, and he stopped short in his tracks. No, I am from Siam. I come here, now and then, to make some money then go back to my parents there. I come with some of the people who come here to trade. I come by boat, stay for a week, then we go back home together." Coralia and Sassy were intrigued by the child's story.
