After decades of hopes and planning, Mizoram's capital Aizawl has officially been connected to the Indian Railways network. The inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang broad-gauge rail line marks a historic moment for the state—one that promises to transform how people travel, trade, and live across the Northeast.
What Made It Possible
The new rail line spans 51.38 km, connecting Bairabi (in Assam) to Sairang, which is just outside Aizawl, enriching the rail grid deep into Mizoram.
It's a feat of engineering: 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, and one pier (Bridge No. 196) standing tall at 104 metres—taller than the Qutub Minar.
The project cost is estimated at around ₹8,000-₹8,200 crore, reflecting both the geographical challenges and the strategic importance of the route.
