* This is just something that I quickly wrote back towards the beginning of the pandemic. I think it's still pretty relevant (though not as much as before), and I just wanted to post this somewhere lol * In the blink of a second, everything has changed. Something that I thought would never happen in my lifetime has taken the world by storm - a global pandemic. COVID-19 has struck and it seems that this virus won't be leaving anytime soon. So what does this mean for us teens? No school!! But while I usually can't wait until a break from school, this isn't something I can be ecstatic about - not when people are dying by the hundreds every day. In order to reduce the risk of catching the virus ourselves, my family and I have shut ourselves in our house. Not that we have much of a choice after Gov Pritzker issued the stay-at-home order. Our teachers gave us work to do at home to make sure we keep our brains active during this time, but there's only so much work they could give that wouldn't be too dependent on the internet - some kids don't have internet access at home (not that I'm saying I've finished everything cause I definitely haven't, but I'd rather not spend 16 hours doing work everyday). So what do I do with all this extra time At first, I had no idea what to do. I spent most of my time on my phone watching Youtube videos, kdramas, reading on Webtoon, etc. You know, the basic stuff I do when I want to waste time. Except there's simply too much of it to just do that now⦠So I had to find a better way to make use of this extra time. I decided to think about what I liked to do - yes, I had to think about it for a while because my brain had been consumed by school for too long. I made a list of these things; - Baking - Drawing/Calligraphy - Writing - Painting et cetera, et cetera ⦠That's when I realized that I have waaaay too many hobbies (heh), but at least I've found a better way to spend my time now. This week I baked breakfast for my family; pull-apart cinnamon roll brioche. Yes, it's as good as it sounds (also as hard to bake). This was only my second time baking it, but I think I did a pretty good job⦠I also baked a batch of brownies yesterday and they're pretty much gone now - I don't know why, but that makes me happy. I did some calligraphy art to post on my insta, and I'm starting some sketches and paintings to decorate my wall. I can't wait till I start doing DIYs from Pinterest again! I feel like being locked in like this made me re-enjoy the things that I love doing. While I'm still stressed about keeping up with school stuff and making sure I stay safe amidst all this, I feel like I can breathe a bit and calm myself amidst the panic. It's hard to not panic when you can't go outside in fear of catching the virus. Right now, I'm just appreciating how kind people are, and how amidst this crisis, everyone across the globe has been united to fight against this common enemy. To keep my mind off of things that'll worsen my anxiety, I'm going to make sure that all the little side projects and ideas that I've had are completed during this time that I have. I'm not exactly happy about this situation, but that doesn't mean that I can't live through it without panicking. Right now, anxiety and panic is our enemy. I feel like preventing that panic and fear from taking over is what everyone has to do to help - even if you're not battling this virus at the forefront. Stay safe.
If you want to achieve any goal in your life. There are the same steps which you need to follow when baking a cake. 1) Choose a recipe. 2) Clean up the kitchen. 3) Get the ingredients ready. 4) Bake 5) Wait Now how can we implement these 5 steps in our mission? 1) Choose a recipe - First you need to find out what you truly want to do. For example, I wish to write something for my post. So the cake which I wanted to prepare is this post. 2) Clean up the kitchen - One has to be sure what to do and what not to. So I just cleaned up my mind and removed all those thoughts and emotions which were disturbing. In general, make space for the mission. 3) Get the ingredients ready - The ingredients which were required to 'bake' this post were words, thoughts, ideas, etc. 4) Bake - Just do it step by step and you will find yourself done with baking the cake. I wrote the content and posted it on my page. 5) Wait - After the cake is ready, you offer it to your family members and wait for their reaction. Just the way I am waiting now for you all to read this post and give your review. At the end, the cake is baked and the goal is achieved too. β *TMI: This is what I prepared for my parents' 20th wedding anniversary.π*
Life indeed is full of surprises, taking unexpected turns, well who in the start of 2020 had the slightest idea of the current situation we are facing. Staying at home, avoiding stepping out as much as possible, not completely dressed without a mask, social distancing is lately the new normal. To be honest, quarantine has somewhat been quite a ride, with a lot of time in hand, we don't always know how to spend it. For starters, binge watching different series available, something which most of us out there are doing, to while away time. In the process I have come to realize quite a few things, like how you can always rely on your true friends, not being afraid to take risks, how family is the most important thing in life, human instincts regardless of their background and looking at things with different perspectives. While we stay home most of the time, we miss a lot of stuff, like enjoying outside delicacies, exploring different restaurants and cafes. Quarantine without a doubt is bringing out the chef in everyone. Social media stories definitely prove how people are experimenting cooking at home. I have baked a lot in this period, at least more than what I usually used to, it's something I thoroughly enjoy. If we pay attention it does teach us an important thing in life, the importance of each ingredient and the right balance of each ingredient to bring out a spectacular dish. It is the same with life too, each moment, happy, sad, exciting, dull, every moment is important for us to understand different things. The satisfaction of baking and eating cakes, rather food is a joy in itself. With this joy comes calories, and with it comes the realization of the need to exercise, which I do on a regular basis, like weight lifting, push ups and walking. Another thing that we all miss is, hanging out with friends, playing pranks, partying, and most of all spending time with them in person. Thanks to social media that we stay connected. A lot of my friend's birthdays happen to be in this period as well, and i tried my best to fill in the void of not meeting on the occasions by making a video message with the group and a video call that lasted very long filled with laughter and fun. Celebrating birthdays and special occasions has indeed found a new way. Friends make life much more interesting, they are definitely a very important ingredient in the recipe of life. A life without these clowns is hard to imagine let alone live, it would perhaps be awfully boring. What also keeps me going is my love for dogs. Just simply the way they are makes me love them unconditionally. Once me and my friends found a bunch of puppies in our society and we couldn't help but play with them. The next day, we got cardboard and made them little shelters, fed them bread crumbs. We took care of them as much as possible for a few days and one day they just disappeared. We only hope that they are in the best of their health. I do spend a lot of time with my neighbor's dog, surprisingly enough she is more friendly with me than anyone else. Willingly shakes hands and gives high fives. It's a bliss to spend time with her. Amidst all these, you really need to have some brain exercises, well it is needed. And an exciting way is to solve some aptitude questions and brain teasers. I have solved a bunch of them and am sure my skills are better than what I had when I was at the first question. They do help us in order to face problems, interviews, exams and importantly build on to our confidence. Being a part of Dexterity school has also helped improve a lot during this period. A leadership development program that has not only helped me build my leadership skills but improve on a lot of other factors. The monthly assignments have made me work on my concentration, listening, writing, critical thinking and analytic thinking. We also have monthly meetings with the CEO himself and are reviewed on our assignments. The meetings have proved to be very helpful, we are guided and taught what to pay attention to and how to improve the quality of the work. Mainly I have focused and learned a lot on my presentation skills, which I realize to be an essential factor. It has also opened a lot of platforms and competitions that I otherwise would have not participated in. The plus point of the whole situation is, we get to spend a lot of time with our families. In the world of technology where when we used to be home after a long day, we would rather sit back with our gadgets and spend time on the internet claiming that's the only time we got to be connected with the world, we did neglect the family time. This lock down made us actually spend time with each other, be it playing games together or just sitting in a room and talking. Makes me realize what we miss out otherwise, creating memories of a lifetime. This is how my quarantine is going, with learning and relaxing both being a part, so far so good.
I was 7 years old when I remember my mom first leaving me. I suppose you could've considered me naive. I always thought she intended on coming back. One night, we were hanging out in the living room, watching her favorite; Keeping up with the Kardashians. (Not my taste). The oven was heating up some bagel bites and it rang, indicating they were done. My mom told me to stay put and she'd be back down. So I waited. After a couple minutes I went upstairs and she was sitting at the table, phone in hand, looking distraught. When she saw me she immediately hung up. She asked me if i wanted a coke, I said yes, and she told me she'd be right back. She left into the garage to fetch it. I waited and waited for what felt like forever but finally my patience wore thin. I walked into the kitchen and opened the door to the garage where we kept a fridge full of soda and found the main garage door open into the dark night and my mom no where to be seen. That is my first recollection of my mom leaving me. Throughout my life she would come in and out, always in spurts and never for long. Drugs controlled her life. It got to the point where when she'd stay the night I'd hold her hand so that I would wake up if she went to leave while I slept. Fast forward to when I was about 12. I found out my mom was dying of a liver disease; a rare one. It had been a couple years since I heard from her. She got into contact with my dad, and from then we scheduled calls. I kept up with her as much as my 7th grade mind could. I didn't really comprehend exactly what was happening. 8th grade. By this time my mom was in hospice. Her disease was beyond repair. With her not staying sober, she couldn't be placed on the donor wait list for a liver. On the night of April 31st 2014 my mom died. I was... devastated. I had gotten home from church and my dad called me into the room. He told me and my brother she wasn't going to make it through the night. I remember picking up the phone, and she could barely speak. I said; "Mom... I love you. I miss you. And I forgive you." And just above a whisper. So soft you could barely hear, "I love you." She said. We hung up the phone and my heart died. My life, as I knew it, would never be the same. I would never see my mom at Christmas again. She wouldn't see me dress up for prom. She wouldn't see me graduate. She wouldn't see me walk down the aisle. Now I am 17 years old. It's been almost 4 years and I still hear her last words to me as clear as when she spoke them. I love her. I forgive her. And we both are free.
People are different. Even they were born from the same family, but they are not the same. The main reasons that make them being different but unique in their own ways are time and experience. Time is always moving. It will never stop, and people will experience more about life as the time passed by. With all those experiences that come along with the moving time, people gradually begin to learn new idea that can help them to adapt in the environment that they are living. My name is Ryda. I am 19 years old which I think is old enough for me to spare my little knowledge and experience to the world. It is my pleasure to talk about my life at Sunrise Children's Village, the orphanage. In 2005 I and my cousins were sent to an orphanage called Sunrise Children's Village. By going there, it doesn't mean that I was an orphan but my parents was super poor. They couldn't afford for my study, clothes and food. I knew they didn't want to send me away, but they had no choice, because I saw they were crying behind the car that I was sitting in. The car that was going to take me away from my hometown. I didn't feel anything at that time. I just wonder why they were crying. On the way to SCV, I was sleeping most of the time. Therefore, I did not have any time to figure out why my parents were crying. When I arrived Sunrise Children's Village (SCV), I was really excited because everything was different from my hometown and it was really fascinating. There was a playground which I had never known that it existed on this earth. The separation between the dining room and bedroom wasn't what I had seen in my village, because we had only one room in our house or cottage. The lights and the fans were all hung from the cell which I found really amazing, because we used only the light from the candle or the light from oil. We didn't have any fans. For rich people in our village, they would use the battery to light their house but not electricity. We didn't have any electricity as in Sunrise. In addition, the television that was colorful, and it can be played with DVD or CD or USB, in Sunrise, was not what was used in my village. In my village, we used the TV that the color was white and black, and it couldn't be seen clearly. Moreover, it couldn't be played with any DVD or CD or USB, yet poor families in our village including mine were not able to buy that black and white TV to watch. But SCV managed to buy that colorful TV which made me think that Sunrise was super rich. Actually, there are many differences between SCV and my hometown, it is like the different between the poor and rich societies. But this are the main points that I noticed when I first arrived there. By staying and studying at Sunrise, I have learned many things such as English, Khmer traditional dance, Khmer general knowledge, sports, and some music instruments. Moreover, I was able to go abroad for two times. For the first time, I was able to go to two countries to perform Khmer traditional dance which included Australia, and Singapore. I couldn't remember much about that trip, because I was young. The main thing that I remembered is that I have done a lot of performance, and I was really happy. The second time, I went to Australia to study tour or study exchange. I could remember many things from this experiences, because I went there on 2014 which was not too long. I was extremely happy and excited with this study tour, because I have been to a lot of places in Sydney such as the zoos, the park, the monument, and the mountain. Nevertheless, I was on the big boat with a really great and fantastic environment. I felt really lucky about that, but I did miss Cambodia so much. In short, with this two experiences I have learned many things about the foreign countries. Also, I have learned that the world is not as small as I thought which can make my knowledge getting broader and wider. In conclusion, I have talked briefly about my life at Sunrise Children's Village. There were a lot of differences between this organization and my hometown, and I was really happy to live in both places. Living in Sunrise, I have learned and experienced many new things that I have never done before. Therefore, I am really thankful to Sunrise.
