The silence stretched out between them until the ticking of the workshop clock sounded like a heartbeat. He looked down at his own wrinkled hands, then back at the book. He didn't argue. That night, Maya didn't go back to her safe basement. She drove through the rain to the old house. The boxes were still sitting there on the curb, soaked through by the evening mist under the dim streetlights. She knelt right on the wet asphalt, letting her expensive coat ruin in the dirt, and pulled open the flaps of the first box.
