Nothing but lush green filled the vision of Roman Santos, who spun to admire the spectacle. Under the shiny leaves, the umber-colored branches of the tree were well-hidden. It was like a sea of emeralds surrounding him, dancing in the air to the tone of the gentle wind which gave them a rhythm. Except that wind was from his own professor's fan. Roman crawled on all fours with his back only an inch from the jagged pine wood. Ever since he drank Dr. Miro's elixir, his entire body had shrunken down to the size of an ant; each leaf had become as big as his entire body. Dr. Miro's words from just an hour earlier still echoed in his head: “It's a true test. Drink this elixir, and you'll shrink so much that my bonsai tree will appear as a giant force of nature.” “So you're promising me that if I find every piece of gold slathered on its leaves, I'll win a million dollars?!” Roman asked as he hunched over his chair next to Dr. Miro's desk. “Yes,” the professor answered. “Remember, Roman. This bonsai tree is special. It's the rarest species in the world - one which can grow gold on its leaves. All you need to do is shrink down, collect the gold, and trade it in for cash.” As his recollection faded, Roman peered down the tree trunk, landing his eyes at the dirt which hosted the roots. Time to start hunting for that gold… he thought. With his sights on the first leaf in front, it didn't take long for him to locate his first piece of treasure. The glossy yellow made it easy to detect, and it appeared more splashed than slathered. Roman worked away at pulling the gold off of the leaf's surface - his fingers clawed at the edges while he heaved at his prize. By the time it finally unstuck itself from the leaf, Roman found his forehead drenched in sweat. “Ugh, this will take a while…” But it wasn't until the third leaf, at the sight of its thin and weak-looking petiole - “Wait, I'm so stupid…” - was when he realized how simple the task assigned to him truly was. With both hands gripping the sides of the leaf which was as wide as his entire torso, Roman twisted the entire blade menacingly. Within seconds, the petiole ruptured, tearing the entire leaf off its branch. “Alright!” One by one, Roman began breaking each leaf off entirely, while dropping them to the ground below between snaps. This is a much easier way to collect the gold! “Ouch,” he muttered, caressing his knee as it caught a bump on the twig he kneeled on. He forgot the tree's branches were snaggy and hardly sittable. I just have to avoid the sharper parts, he thought, and grinned as he continued collecting. To Roman, it simply meant higher risk, higher reward. For a million dollars, nothing was impossible. And so he continued breaking off every leaf from the bonsai tree. By the end of the day, only one thought lingered in his mind: How should I spend my million bucks? Not a single leaf remained on the tree. A smile engulfed his face as Dr. Miro greeted him from the ground below. “Congrats, now please come down.” A red ladder appeared just below his feet, prompting him to finally come down from a long day of treasure hunting. Roman smirked as he reached the ground, observing the pile of leaves he gathered next to the trunk. “You completed the task in a way I expected you to,” Dr. Miro explained. “Nice, now where's my money?” But then it happened. “Wait, what the fuck?!” Roman cried as his feet began sinking into the dirt. Any yank from either leg proved to be useless. “Your time has come to an end,” Dr. Miro explained with a sigh. “What do you mean?!” Roman yelled as the dirt underneath continued swallowing him up like quicksand. “You became greedy, and prioritized your own self-interests over the health of my bonsai tree.” “Screw off! You're the one who told me-” “Yes, that I know. And it's not just your fault, it's our fault.” With one last scream of agony, Roman's head tucked under the enveloping dirt from the ground. Two Days Later João walked into his former professor's lab while a policewoman followed from behind. “Dr. Roman Miros Santos passed away in his lab yesterday due to cerebral hypoxia,” the cop explained. “I recall he was also suffering from a few mental illnesses, and sometimes referred to himself as two different people,” replied João. “But even our president loved him.” “That's ‘cause he was an advocate for the President's Deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest project last year…” “Ah, yes, I remember his ten-year-old bonsai tree was completely dead when I found his body. No leaves, no life,” answered João. “There's a lot of folklore about that bonsai tree species. It's said that Gaia, the Goddess of Nature, created that tree to test the morals of humans. It could grow gold, but the only way to extract it without damaging the tree was to let the leaves fall by themselves. Gaia was testing greed. The tree's bumpy branches represented the uselessness of those who knew, but ignored its pleas for help.”
Gardening was something that I never really had an interest in. I would rather be reading or watching a movie or avoiding anything that would make me get dirty. It just wasn't my thing at the time. Now that I'm older, I'm starting to appreciate the things I never appreciated as a kid. Gardening is one of them. I didn't know much about gardening when I started, other than what my parents had told me. They were the gardeners of the family. They would always be planting flowers and grass and whatever else they could grow. So, our yard was always beautiful. I had been reading up about people who had grown their food and I have to admit, reading those stories sparked my quest in starting my garden. At the beginning of last year, with my father's help, I decided to grow some of my favorite fruits and vegetables. I had strawberries, cucumbers, and tomatoes. I was beyond excited. I had never done anything like this before. It started well. I was watering them, feeding them. I was doing everything I could to help them grow. Unfortunately, my gardening attempt wasn't exactly a successful one. Aside from bad weather and other issues, some of the plants did not make it but in that time, I had suffered probably the most devastating loss of all. My father had passed away. He was the one that helped me bring my garden to life. He helped me prepare the soil, dig the holes and mix the plant food. He and I were always close, and gardening was just another hobby we enjoyed together even if we only got to do it for a few weeks. I tried my best to tend to the garden -- what was left of it. Some of them managed to linger on into the Summer, but eventually, there was nothing left. But I wasn't going to give up so easily. Despite everything that happened, I was determined to continue with my newfound hobby. Even if my gardening buddy wasn't with me anymore. I am happy to say that I've had better success this year than I had last year. My mom even gave me some flower seeds to add some color. And they certainly did. The strawberries grew this time. I even managed to eat a handful of them. The tomatoes have been excellent. Let me tell you about tomatoes. Never underrestmite them. I did and they are completely out of control. They're still good though, and most importantly they are still producing the goods. That's all that matters. One of the most surprising things I'm currently growing is zucchini. I didn't even know I was growing one. At first, I thought it was a pumpkin because I had thrown pumpkin seeds in the flower bed. They never grew, but I thought this was them. One morning, I'm looking at the mysterious plant and discover it's not a pumpkin but a zucchini! I don't know much about zucchinis, but I gladly welcome them to my garden. I wish my dad was here to see it. To see how well everything has grown. I know he would be proud. I know I am. And I hope someday, maybe, I can do this with my kid. Gardening has become one of my favorite things and I find it to be quite thrilling. To me, it's one of the best feelings in the world, and you can't beat that.
The above picture is the second picture which I clicked from my brand new smartphone. The picture shows a fresh leaf which is in its prime youth. One day while I was strolling in my garden, all of a sudden, my attention went to this leaf. Just by looking at the plant, anyone could have felt that there was something different about this particular leaf. It was quite easy to spot. It was brighter as well as slightly smaller than the others. After I discovered this leaf, I started taking care of it and made sure that it looked the same always. I was able to keep a track of it for 6-7 days but to my utter disappointment, on the very same day of the next week I was unable to find that leaf again. I don't know where it disappeared. I felt really sad. Maybe it just went away with the wind or it is possible that due to the pressure of the rain drops the delicate leaf weighed down and drifted away from its counterparts. Whatever be the reason but I felt really bad about it... I know nothing is permanent in this world and no one of us is forever. But the effect that leaf had on me, its ethereal beauty, its freshness and its liveliness, is surely there to stay! As in John Keats famous words, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." 💚
Worried. Anxious. Unsettling. This is the 20th century, where modern medicine has an answer to everything. Well, almost. As the number of COVID-19 patients and death cases continue to rise, most of the governments around the world are taking preventive measures by limiting human interactions and likewise in Malaysia, Movement Control Order (MCO) was instituted. Since early June, this blessed nation is in the recovery phase where the experiences of being in a state of lockdown was no longer apparent. In fact, the concern is no longer about the pandemic but rather, the state of the economy which came to a standstill since the lockdown began. Reflecting on what happened three months back, where the streets in major cities were quiet and similarly with shopping malls where only essential service providers such as groceries and pharmacies were opened, and the light rail transit – which people complained about being ‘sandwiched' in their daily commute previously – was simply empty. As I experienced working between being in the office and working from home on alternate weeks, I have the best of both worlds, having the ability to enjoy the serenity of working from home as well as being able to experience the world out there on my way to the office during that period. Outside home, I experienced the ghostly neighbourhood feeling – parks were empty as joggers stayed home to abide by the laws related to the lockdown and the roads which were usually congested during the rush hour was even quieter than during the major festive seasons when many had left for their hometowns. During those weeks where I got to work from home, I experienced the additional time that was previously allocated for being stuck in traffic jams. Time that was saved from not travelling from point A to B – and this included not having to go through congestions, traffic lights, looking for parking, stopping at toll gates and other miscellaneous braking that will add time to a journey has allowed me to appreciate the environment around me more than before, and I was astonished with how beautiful life is when I am given time to look at the varieties of flowers I have in my garden, to listen to the birds chirping, to breathe the fresh air and yes, hold my wife's hand. All this under the roof that we have committed to grow old together in. Another change: I agreed with my wife to order our groceries online. Again, we saved time by efficiently selecting what we wanted online instead of hanging out in grocery stores and subsequently not needing to queue at the cashier as well as to wait for the lift! The next activity may not involve much time saving but has greatly enhanced our quality of life where my wife has cooked more often than before. While watching my wife cook, I visualised myself being the hardworking farmer, toiling in the farms from dawn till dusk, all sweaty and muscular at the end of the day. Plans are underway to incorporate some farming activities in my gardening routines. As much as I appreciated the new sense of quiet and the fresh air, as a dog lover, I am not allowed to leave my home, let alone walk the dogs! From this lockdown, I learnt that apart from walks, what they enjoyed most is me being around them. They enjoy pats (and massages too!) on their forehead, being groomed, or being talked to. It is no wonder that they are man's best friend – they simply mirror and adapt to my lifestyle and moods. Apart from time in the garden with my dogs, I managed to enjoy television series and movies from my living room television. One of them was Zoo, an American drama television series based on the 2012 novel of the same name by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge. Premiered on June 30, 2015, I can't help but feel the goosebumps while pondering about how interconnected the current pandemic is with what I am watching in front of me. With theories about the COVID-19 virus originating from animals and infecting humans, Zoo encapsulates all that, and more. In the television series, animals were infected with a virus that made them aware of their hierarchy in the planet and they have the intelligence to coordinate with various species from various levels of the food chain to put human ‘in their place', reversing their fate as a subservient species to be a dominant one. This reminded me of the meme of how animals started roaming free during lockdowns around the world while humans remained ‘locked-up' in their own homes. This pandemic has been an eye-opening experience. Not many thought such an event could happen in their lifetime. Unlike any crisis that the world has seen before, say, perhaps the major world wars, everybody was affected, regardless of race, creed or religion. The question that loomed ahead is: How did we get into this mess? And how are we going to get out of this? I don't have the answer. Perhaps Mahatma Gandhi did. “The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.”
I spent so many hours, days, weeks, dare I say months thinking and wondering where we went wrong and now and all those sleepless nights, stressful mornings, and days I spent mourning lead me to this conclusion. Nothing went wrong we just grew differently in the last few months of our relationship. You had your morals and I had mine but something changed in our morals in the very few months that we dated and I don't wanna point fingers but it was primarily you. I don't need to explain what I mean by this, you aren't dumb you know what habits you took up. You know how grapes grow on vines and how someone needs to wrap the little stems around a wooden frame for the grapes to grow and survive. Well we didn't garden our grapes, we hoped they could rap themselves and how did that end? They fell off the wooden frame and died.

To a universal traveler, Earth may seem to be a harmless little planet in the far reaches of one of billions of spiral galaxies in the universe. Gaia describes an elliptical trajectory across an average size star of middling brightness and joined by seven other planets, which support no known recognizable life forms constituting the solar system. While this may be fitting for a passage from numerous prequels and sequel Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (among other entertaining out of this world page turners for estranged mortals feeling like outliers in this alien nation), by the late Douglas Adams, in the grand scheme of the universe, it would be a fairly accurate description. This aspiring novelist, writing enthusiast and food blogger was born on July 16, 1968, in Flint Michigan. Her musical talents began at a very young age. She began singing in church at the age of 7 and had the violin mastered by the age of twelve. Then, before she knew it, she was whisked away with her family, to sunny Florida to live. She was a middle child who grew up and spent her teenage years on the boardwalk of Daytona Beach. She attended a private Christian academy where she was active in cheerleading, dancing, journalism, and swimming. After high school, she decided her horizons needed broadening. She attended college in Michigan and obtained her degree with a major in Business. Then she got a job and wore black pumps to work every day. She had lunch with the girls, drank coffee every day, wore suits to work, and treated herself to manicures on a monthly basis. She became a top seller in lead sales in her division and overall ranked #13 in the United States as the top seller in her field. She was given a bonus, a promotion, and a lovely spa package. She was managing to raise four children as a full- time mom. Her children were all teenagers by this time. She was working many hours overtime, parent-teacher meetings, homework, school plays, science projects, and after-school activities. She was that one woman trying to achieve it all and trying not to allow her kids to feel left behind. One morning, she woke up for work and found her thirteen-year-old son half dead, slumped over on the living-room sofa. She had him rushed to the emergency room. It turned out that he happened to be sick and needed hospitalization for several months. He would need after-care treatment once he returned home. After very little thought about her decision, while her son was in intensive care, she went to her work and turned in her keys and resigned. She felt deep in her heart that her son needed her. She belonged at home with her son. Financially they were fine. She had her savings, 401K, and bonuses she managed to save. Her son remained her only concern. A year passes by, and her son became strong and healthy. They all started going to their local church not far from their home. She became a Sunday School teacher. She also started singing in the adult choir and played her violin. She began teaching at a girl's club in the church and she also taught at the Christian camp every summer. She was scheduled to sing a solo one night. She waited to be called up to the stage. Once announced to the stage, she briefly told her testimony. She glanced around the room and noticed people whispered to one another. They pointed at her. It made her feel awkward, but she continued with her song. They graciously applauded and she took her seat. After she had taken her seat, she felt someone rub her shoulder, and she turned around. Nobody was there. Then, something caught the corner of her eye. Laying draped across her shoulder. She gasped. Her hairpiece that was attached to her ponytail had fallen off. It had fallen across her shoulder. Her face started to turn beet red, and she started to sink down into her seat. She could see the people that sat around her with their pitiful smiles, It made her feel more embarrassed. She had to find her escape route immediately. She excused herself. She took her children and herself at home. She didn't return back to church for a couple weeks. Unexpectedly, she met and fell in love with a southern gentleman. He lived in Alabama. Now she lives in the country in Northern Michigan. Her days are spent working in the garden, planting flowers, cleaning the dirt out from under her fingernails and making gravy. They have a home that they purchased and are fixing up. They are renting out the guest house and are in the process of painting and redecorating. It is a chore but the process has been refreshing. It took a while for her to adjust to being without her children. It was the five of them for so long. She went through empty nest syndrome. She even cried and went through depression for a short time. However, she found writing as a way to escape. She would journal and also write in her food blog. She would also find refuge in her garden. I'm sure if her adolescent self could see her now she would cringe at how she traded in her idea of becoming an unmarried, without children, fashion designer in Paris, to a Business degree achiever, writing her first novel, completing an E-Book called “Comfort Foods for the Soul,” and falling in love with a better life. A life full of possibilities, a life much better for her.
