It was a cold winter Saturday evening with a hazy sky and mighty winds blew against the tree branches when I was walking down the street near the tram stop called Nerudova, thought that I had nowhere to go aside from the library or dormitory. It was at 4 pm in the evening but the sky grew into the darker shades and my blurry eyesight was fatigued. Still, I was in a peaceful mood. At that time, while I tried to put my earphones on but something captivated me. I saw an adoptable cat sitting in the darkness, yet the light sheded from the street lamp reflected his shadow. With that mischievous light gray eyes, he attempted to catch and chase his own shadow. However, no matter how much time he failed to catch, he still did not hesitate to give up. I had no idea how can that cat made me laugh just because of his idiot behavior, attempting to find something that is impossible or does not exist. Probably, that poor cat had no clue that trying to chase his own shadow is an illusion. In many unsuccessful attempts, he suddenly stopped and stared at the shadow with exhausted eyes. I wonder what was in his head, I want to say “Hey, what are you going to do next, stupid cat?” to him, but I was afraid that he didn't know what I really mean since pets in Czechia only know the Czech language. After 30 minutes of observation, I went back to my dormitory, back to my room, prepared dinner, completed the assignment, and headed to bed, expected to get enough sleep. Nevertheless, still, the thought of that pathetic adorable cat appeared in my head, and his action got me contemplating for 2 hours straight, and I was amazed about the way I conveyed his behavior which I considered stupidity to real-life self-knowledge. Apparently, that cat taught me running after the shadows mean following fantasy which is the reason why I don't find the real meaning of life anywhere in my lonely life. Try to chase your shadow. You'll never catch it. Try to grab it by leaping on top of it, and it will disappear. It means trying to follow something is not exist. However, when you quit chasing that illusion, it will follow you instead, being that the shadow is the one which will chase after you because you started following the real you. Your current shadow is your own past and your present self will be a shadow of your future. So make sure to be a good and happy shadow. Since that day's reflection, I think that cat has lighted me up inside. I don't know whenever I see that cat plays around I always seem to smile like a crazy woman's experiencing first love ha-ha. Oh, I named that cat “Ruth” because he has beautiful straight silver pattern fur and light grey eyes with blue around the iris and the meaning behind the name is “compassionate friend”. Based on my own judgment, Ruth's personality is quite complex. Sometimes he could be an outgoing and sometimes could be a skittish and inquisitive cat. Ruth has got a friend in me. When I think nobody would ever completely understand my loneliness, Ruth did. That's my new friend.
