Mikaela Pauline Shiffrin was born on March 13, 1995, in Vail, Colroado to parents Eileen and Jeff Shiffrin who are former ski racers. She has one sibling, Taylor, who was also involved in ski racing and raced for the University of Denver.
She and her family followed her anesthesiologist father back and forth to New Hampshire, Vermont, and Colorado. Her club is listed as Burke Mountain Academy in northeastern Vermont.
Mikaela made her debut in the World Cup on March 11, 2011 in Czech Republic in the giant slalom. In April she won her first slalom title at the U.S. National Championships in Winter Park, Colorado when she had just turned 16 a few weeks before.
Mikaela' career has been skyrocketing after winning slalom gold medal in Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 when she was three weeks shy of her 19th birthday, making her the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine skiing history! Following it up with three world titles consecutively, she became the first woman in 78 years to achieve that particular victory. After winning the overall World Cup title in 2016, she had her most successful season ever.
She entered the slalom event at 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea as the big favorite. She's already won the gold medal in giant slalom; she tied Andrea Mead Lawrence and Ted Ligety for the most Olympic gold medals in alpine skiing won by an American athlete in history. In an unexpected outcome, she finished the slalom in fourth place.
