It is always us
Fatima is a 17-year-old girl living in Central Asia. She studies at university. One day, she heard about the “Work and Travel” program and thoroughly learned about it. She decided to do “Work and Travel” in Germany, but first, she should ask for permission from her parents. When her parents came home from work, she introduced the program, explaining what it was, what she would do, and the benefits she could gain. At the end, she said, “Mom, dad, the only thing that I want is to travel around the world. And Europe is a great chance to start, as I can travel in train from one country to another. Please let me go.” “We will discuss it.”, her parents said. She was happy because it seemed like her dreams were coming true, and soon she could travel around Europe. After this talk several days passed, but still, there was no answer from Fatima's parents. Fatima waited her parents come in on the 4th day and gave them the same question: “Can I go to Germany to do Work and travel?” Her father shortly answered “No”. In that moment, something inside her fell like a rock from a mountain. It was her dream… “But why?” she asked in shock. “How can I let you go to the countryside alone without anyone. I would let even if you were a boy.” “Boy? What does being a boy have to do with it? Don't you trust me?” she said nervously, with shaking hands. “My girl, understand us. We do trust you, but we do not trust the world. It doesn't matter how good person you are when the world is dangerous. You can always be well-behaved with kind heart but we are afraid of people around you who can make something bad to you.”, said her mother kindly. “No, you don't understand me, they cannot make anything bad if I am on the right path. I will always keep in touch with you, show everything that I am doing. Please, let me go.” She was ready to cry when she said it. “We won't discuss it anymore, you are too young to travel alone. When you become older, we will think about it.” “But my friend will be with me!” “No”, her dad angrily answered. She ran to her room and cried for hours. Fatima couldn't understand why her parents were so afraid, why they didn't trust her. To her, the world was a beautiful and safe place. She believed that if she were right, fair, and kind, and treated people well, they would also respond in kind. Now, the world began to seem bad in Fatima's eyes. If people were good, her dreams would come true, but because of them, now she had to cry in her room, killing her dreams. Several weeks have passed since that day. Now everything is ok with Fatima. She forgot about that conversation, but she didn't give up on her dreams. “What if the world is really dangerous? It was always dangerous but people lived, they survived even in the worst hardships. What if there are bad people? Bad people are found in every era as well as kind ones. If there is no one kind around, become the first one. What if there is war? We can always fight to stop the war. One person's voice cannot decide anything, but if we unite, we can do many things. There is always hope. There was, there is and there will be. Just we should believe and not give up on our dreams.” This was the main insight that she has gained so far. The world is not to blame, it is always us.
