Monkeys and Bananas, Wolves and Sheep's Clothing

Port Angeles, WA, USA

I come from a tottering Victorian household, six monkeys, 21 cats, three dogs, and an unperfumed skunk in the basement. Raised on the remote Olympic Peninsula I suppose my parents got away with crazy because there was no big city near us to keep their acticities in check. Difficult to tell who was plagued more by the monkeys of mental illness--the parents who had it or the tender kids who tried to grow through its ever lowering ceiling.

I come from the Salish Sea, from fresh dug geoduck clams, Dungeness crabs in large pots that boil over onto a handle-less stove. I was served fresh boiled nettles in a cracked dish along with battered and fried dandelion blossoms which, by the way, taste a little like oysters. My spirit mixed in with wild blackberries topped with whipped cream and I was swallowed whole, right after the rainbow trout and fried taters.

I come from a monkey in the oven.

I come from Crazy Street. I speak hope, humor, and creativity to adult children who continue to heal from effects of mentally ill parents.
